Back Injuries – Get Your Workers Back in Control

Jokes about nagging back pain get standup commedians a lot of laughs, but back strains and sprains are not at all funnynor should they be an unavoidable curse to anyone.

Did you know workplace back injuries resulted in millions of dollars in medical bills over the last year? Those disabling back injuries were no laughing matter for the employees who lost time from work and their personal activities. The sad truth is that most of the pain and lost time could have been prevented.

The Lowdown on Spinal Safety

A complex network of vertebrae, ligaments, discs, and muscles, the back supports the body and protects the spinal cord from serious injury. When forced to perform movements it’s not designed to handle, the result can be real damage very quickly and unfortunately take a long time to fully heal. That’s why spinal safety and proper form matters.

4 Simple Steps for a Safe Lift

  1. Squat over the item to be lifted and face it squarely. In this position, the back gets added lifting strength and power from the legs and arms.
  2. Tilt the item on edge with its long axis straight up so the center of the weight is as high as possible above the ground.
  3. Move closer to the item—you are ready to lift. You’ll want to get a bit closer because the backbone acts as a supporting column, and it takes the least strain close in.
  4. Still squatting, your feet should be set with legs pointed right at the load. With your back straightened, grasp the load with both arms and slowly stand up with it.

The best way to help your employees learn the correct way to lift is to continue to practice and review safety protocols. They will notice that the correct way to lift is actually the easiest, with the least strain and awkwardness. Lifting the wrong way over time will cause injury and pain.
